Time flies so fast…
It has been a year since I went to the first conference in Santa Barbara, California.
This year, I had another great chance to visit USA again but in Las Vegas, Nevada for the oral presentation in IEEE International Conference on Consumer Electronics 2015 (ICCE2015). Fortunately, it was the same time as the world’s biggest consumer electronics show, CES2015. Amazing, inspiring, and happy are three things for describing about this trip.

So, let me take you to the sin city of Las Vegas and you will know the meaning of those three things!

This year, CES2015 was held during January 6-9, 2015 with more than 3,600 exhibitors, 250 conference session, and 160,000 attendees from 140 different countries. The main upcomming technologies for this year are 3D printing, Curved OLED and UHD display, HD Audio, Wearable devices, Health and Fitness, Unmaned system, and Sensors.

The exhibition was very vast, so I will just pick some technology that really amazes me and takes my breath away.

Display is the first thing I saw in the CES. The most amazing one is the Sony’s world tinnest 4K display. It is a 65-inch display called Sony Bravia X900C coming with amazing 4.9 millimeters thick! It is even thinner than our smartphone!

The Sony’s thinnest display in the world!

More in the display technology, there are several Ultra HD display, Curved display and no-glasses 3D display on the row.

Wearable technology is another category that is getting a high interest in this year. Many glasses from Sony, Samsung, and other brands offer different features. For example Sony’s attachable glasses that can clip on any of your regular glasses with OLED tiny display and Vuzix’s glasses that creates images on lense not the prisms.

Arakawa sensei is trying Sony’s latest attachable glasses

There are many upcoming unmanned system in CES this year, one of the most popular technology is robot vacuums. apart from the trendy vacuum cleaners on the flor that can map their paths and avoid obstacles, I can see several glass cleaner which can clean your room’s windows vertically!

Automotive sensors in many concept cars also impressive, several anti-collision sensor system, depth sensing system, and driver monitor system are the trending technology for this year. It is said that in 2020, the fully self-driving cars will come to the market!

And the last thing I want to share to you today is photography that I love. Nikon announced it’s first small, lightweight amateur DSLR camera with touchscreen, D5500. And the world’s lightest 300mm full-frame lens with the latest Phase Fresnel technology that makes lens become lighter and small than before.
In this CES, Nikon has a 360° project that use 48 cameras placed in a circle take 48 photos from different angle at a time. It gives you a 360° view of your action! Take a look at this website!

I am trying the world’s lightest 300mm full-frame lens from Nikon

Those are just some example of the amazing technologies that was shown in CES2015, if you have a chance, you must not miss this big event!

Fountain show at the Bellagio hotel

After the CES, I attended the ICCE2015, the conference that is a part of CES. The conference itself focus on any applications, technologies, or systems that relate to the consumer electronics. This year, it was held during January 9-12, 2015.

There were many interesting sessions including entertainment services, image/video processing, health and wellness, automotive system, network technology and energy management.

Rather than many researcher’s presentations, there were very inspiring and encoraging session from invited speakers such as Martin Cooper, who was the pioneer of mobile phone and Prof. Shuji Nakamura the nobel prize winner in Physics 2014 who is the inventor of blue LED. They have very interesting career path and inspiring point of view in engineering.

It was my great opportunity that my paper was accepted for the oral presentation in this conference. I had a presentation in the last session on the last day. At first, I was very nervous because it was my first time to present in international conference abroad. I was really scare of my English especially if someone ask me some questions. However, after I have prepared and practiced several times, I could step over my scare and had a smooth presentation on the day.

After I had finished my task in ICCE, I and Arakawa sensei went to play a slot machine. I spent 1$ in the 1 cent slot and I got 7$ as a reward!!

After that, we celebrates our achievement by watching the show of Cirque Du Soleil in the theme of The Beatles Love. It was a very nice 90-minutes performance. Many actor simultaneously show their skill perfectly so that we could not decide who should we focus on!

This comes to the end of my last trip in my 2nd year of Master student.
I did had a really great time, opportunities, and inspiration from 7-days trip in Las Vegas.

I hope this blog, more or less, can inspire you to have a chance to attend a international conference abroad. Just use your afford as much as you can during writing paper and 20min presentation, you will have a great and worthy experience that you will never forget!

Thank you for your reading.

CDS Workshop 2014

Hello everyone,

It’s another great chance of me to share my experience in the CDS Workshop.
Are you ready to go to Hokkai do with me?!

Atmosphere of Hokkaido University… very nice, isn’t it?

The 10th Comsumer Device & System workshop under the organization of The Information Processing Society of Japan (IPSJ) was held on 22nd-23th of May, 2014 at Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan. This workshop focus on the research field consumer products, including comsumer device and system, smart/interactive TV, smart house, energy consumption, social media, etc.

I attended this workshop with three of my friends, Komeda, Akaike, Kume and Yasumoto sensei and Arakawa sensei.

The day before the conference, we arrive at New Shitose airport around 12am. After taking an one and a half hour flight from Osaka, our stomach got starving. Because time and tide wait for no man, we bought Ekiben (Lunch box sold at the train station) so that we can save time for travelling around the most famous city in Hokkaido, Sapporo.

Ekiben on the train to Sapporo

Ishiya Chocolate factory (Shiroi koibito Park) is our first destination. At this wonderful and well-decorated factory, we were enjoyed walking around to observe the production line of Shiroi Koibito. The factory is opened as a museum filled by many old luxurious good made in both Japan and western country. The top of this building is the place where a cafe is located in. They served very tasty cake, coffee and chocolate. And the highlight of this visiting is cooking a huge Shiroi Koibito by ourselves!

Very nice garden inside the park

Own own Shiroi Koibito

At that night, it was the time that I had been waiting for, All-you-can-eat crab legs restaurant!. We chose Nanda (ナンダ) which is located near the Susukino station. The food was awesome! you can eat King crab, queen crab, sushi, sashimi, beef, and other stuff as much as you want!

I love this restaurant the most!

The presentation day has come. We begin the day with soup curry, famous kind of curry in Hokkaido near the Hokkaido University.

This workshop is a little bit small but full of knowledge. I had a presentation first, followed by Yasumoto sensei, Komeda, Akaike, and Kume presented the last. All of us got a lot of interesting and useful questions for our research in the future. We finished our day with Gengis Khan buffet with CDS’s participants. It is all-you-can-eat with lamb, pork and chicken.

I am sorry I did not take a photo of Yasumoto sensei’s presentation

Before we came back to the real world on the next day, we stoped by Otaru, the sea-side small old town near Sapporo. We ate the most famous sushi in Otaru, masazushi, Jaga butter (Steam potato with butter on top), melon, shu cream, coffee, and more!

Thank you for reading until here.

Let me say goodbye to you with this photo, the landmark of Otaru, Otaru cannal.
See you next time…

Hi everyone. This is Poom!

I would like to share my impression of the trip to Santa Barbara, California, USA.
Of course, the main objective of this trip is attending the workshop as a poster presenter, but there might be too much photos of sightseeing in this article. So please do not misunderstand! ><"
From now, let's go to California with me!!

It was 4PM on 25th February, after I had travelled from Kansai Int. Airport in Osaka, I was waiting for boarding at Narita Airport in Tokyo. It was the time I met Arakawa sensei, who always support and encourage me to attend the workshop, ACM HotMobile 2014. He took the another flight from Osaka and from then, our trip was about to began!

We arrived at Los Angeles International Airport in LA, California around 10AM of 25th (about 2AM of 26th in Japan). Although I had sat on the plane for 9hrs and spent most of the time for watching movies, I was not tired but excited!

Today was the day before the workshop, we started our trip with sightseeing around Los Angeles. Fortunately we met Arakawa sensei’s friend who had been staying in LA for a while and drove us around LA.
First, we went to Griffith observatory. This place is famous for the view of Hollywood sign and panoramic view of LA city.

Then we went to the downtown of Hollywood Hills and stop by Grauman’s Chinese Theater, where famous actors have their hand or foot prints there.

Grauman’s Chinese Theater

For lunch, we had the most famous hotdog in Los Angeles, Pink’s Hotdog.

9-inches Chili Hotdog!

We drove through Beverly Hills and Santa Monica Boulevard.

And we had a short stop at Santa Monica beach, one of the most famous beach in LA.

Santa Monica beach was too crowded, so we decided to go to Venice beach which is more peaceful and has more beautiful pier.

The reason why this beach is called Venice.

Finally our first day was finished!
From LA, we took about two and half hours on a bus from LA airport to Santa Barbara.
Our hotel for these 3 nights was Hyatt Santa Barbara hotel.

Our hotel

On the second day, which is the first day of HotMobile 2014, We attended the workshop all day.
We had a breakfast at the hotel. It was very nice because there were many kinds of fruit!

The ACM HotMobile 2014 is a workshop about mobile computing which includes context-aware system, mobile application, security and management. The workshop was organized and supported by many company and organization such as Google, Microsoft, IBM, AT&T, etc. There was about 120 attendees this year. Most of them were top researcher in this area and were very active.

In every oral presentation, totally 22 papers, there were 15 minute presentation and 15 minute for discussion. During those discussion, many audiences, which mostly were American and some Chinese, ask questions and share their opinions enthusiastically. This made the workshop very interesting.

Active discussion

At 6pm, it was time for me to present a poster in poster&demo session. There were 19 poster and 7 demo in this session. I got some comments and advices from those who were interested in my work. Most of them said that my work was really interesting and very useful if I can realize it ^^

After the poster&demo session, there was a banquet with international foods and that was the end of the second day.

In the morning of the 2nd day of HotMobile 2014, we attended the workshop and listened to some interesting works until noon. Before having lunch, we went out to walk around the hotel and went back to have lunch at the hotel.

A lake near the hotel

In the afternoon, we went out for sightseeing in the downtown of Santa Barbara. We walked along the beach and State street which is the main shopping area. It was not so crowded and messy, I guess it was not the high season for tourist. But buildings and footpath were very nice and well designed.

Santa Barbara beach!

State street, the main shopping street in Santa Barbara

We went to the tower of Santa Barbara Courthouse where we can see the whole Santa Barbara city and the sea.

Panoramic view of Santa Barbara from Courthouse

Then we walk around Santa Barbara Amtrak(Railway) station and Santa Barbara pier.

Huge tree near the station. You can compare the size with Arakawa sensei!

The pier

We finish our third day in California at Enterprise Fish Co. restaurant. The restaurant serving fresh seafood. It was very nice!

On the last day, we did nothing except going to the Santa Barbara Airport, having breakfast there, flying to Los Angeles Int. Airport and taking the 10-hours flight back to Japan.

It was the end of this trip.
I hope you enjoyed reading my article and travel to California with me!

See you next time : >

A lonely week

Hello everyone! I’m Poom.

As you know I’m a foreign student here, so…. Let’s read this entry in English!! d(^_^)b

I would like to name this week as a “Lonely Week”.

We began this week with tasty cocktail made by Suzuki at Monday’s night, It was mixed of Malibu, Kahlua and milk. So creative!!

IMG_2267 copy
Suzuki with his proud cocktail

Then we relaxed by playing table tennis, Today we have many special guests, Suzuki, Hirabe and Eto san. It was very fun and we love to play that, if you don’t believe me…see what’s next!

IMG_2227 copySuzuki and Hirabe joined us this time

IMG_2231 copyEto san also joined us before he leaved to DICOMO Conference on the following day

On Tuesday, some of our lab’s member and also sensei went out to DICOMO Conference in Hokkaido, so it’s the beginning of the loneliness in this week. At night, we did what we love again. Yes, playing table tennis!!! At first, we planned to play only one hour, but we couldn’t stop, so we continued playing and totally, we had played for about two hours until 2am!

IMG_2234 copyTable tennis addict!!

Normally, we have seminar and workshop on wednesday. But they was cancelled because of absence of our members and sensei. Also since thursday until Saturday NAIST has a entrance examination. So we have no class on those days. So… we just did our research and there are nothing happened until Friday.

It was almost the end of this week and I would be just a lonely week if these things was not happened.

At the cloudy and silent Friday evening, a student came in with his interesting in our laboratory’s research area. Only three of us, Suzuki, Hirabe and me, (actually 2) introduced him about our laboratory and he looked very attentive.

IMG_2237 copySuzuki and Hirabe were introducing a student about our laboratory

Yamashita san, after he had a hard night writing paper and submit it in the morning, came in to the room and persuade us to make the kakigori (shaved ice). We said “Yes” immediately. We mixed it with some syrup and it was very delicious.

IMG_2268 copyKakigori!!

While we were eating kakigori, some of us came up with idea to go out for dinner because other members was out. After we have searched and thought about our destination, we finally decided to go to French restaurant located in Kyoto university Katsura campus which was said that it was a nice French restaurant with affordable price. So we went out right after that.

We reached the restaurant with dazzle that there are no other customer than us. And we ordered the giant Robster! It was very delicious!!

IMG_2269 copyRobster, steak and atmosphere of the restaurant

After we had finished our dinner, we went to have some sweets in Kyoto city, it was too late, so we could not eat the original Kyoto sweet. We could eat just Parfait, cake and the “Real” kakigori.

IMG_2253 copyOur sweets, Parfait, Kakigori and cake!!

It was almost 11pm, some of us (specially me^^) didn’t want to end that wonderful night, so we came up with a crazy plan to go to Service area near Otsu. We used the coin to fate our destination, SA or home. And it was what I wanted, coin told us to go to SA!!!

We took about 30 minutes to that SA, at that place, we could see the very nice cityscape and also the huge Biwa lake. We bought some drinks and admired the wonderful nightscape in front of us (although it was very dark, haha).

IMG_2259 copyYeah!!

And that was the end of this lonely week. Hope you enjoyed reading my entry.

I would like to say goodbye with photo of our laboratory’s atmosphere showing the loneliness of this week. Until next time, byebye ^^.
